Dipavali Day observed

Yangon, 2 Nov - The ceremony to mark the 2002 Dipavali Day sponsored by Myanmar-India Merchants' Association was held at Inya Lake Hotel yesterday evening.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and wife Daw Yin Yin Nyunt, Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, the deputy ministers, departmental officials, Ambassador of India Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia, Chairman of Myanmar-India Merchants' Association U Maung Shwe and members and guests.

Ministers U Aung Khin and Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and Chairman U Maung Shwe ignited lights to mark the Dipavali Day and New Year celebration. Member of Myanmar-India Merchants' Association U Kyi Min extended greetings to the gathering.

Minister U Aung Khin said Dipavali is a significant Day for Hindus. Dipavali is a Hindu festival of lights. Although most of the people in Myanmar are Buddhists, the government created the rights for freedom of religion. The minister wished all the people understanding, goodwill, mutual respect and unity among them.

Ambassador of India Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia also spoke on the occasion. Those present at the ceremony were entertained to Indian cultural dances.
