Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe attends First Greater Mekong Subregion Summit in Phnom Penh

Yangon, 6 Nov - A ceremony to open the First Greater Mekong Subregion Summit was held at the Hotel Inter-Continental in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on 3 November evening, attended by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe.  

Participating in the summit were Heads of State/Government of the GMS countries, namely, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Boungnang Vorachit, Prime Minister of Thailand Dr Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai, President of Asian Development Bank Mr Tadao Chino, Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, wives of the Heads of State/Government of the GMS countries, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife Daw San Yon, Myanmar Ambassador U Saw Hla Min and wife Daw Khin Swe Yu, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and departmental heads, ministers of the GMS countries, high-ranking officials and officials of Asian Development Bank.

 

Chairman of the GMS Summit Prime Minister for the Royal Government of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the First Greater Mekong Subregion Summit.

The First Greater Mekong Subregion Summit followed at Ball Room-3 of the Hotel Inter-Continental.

Before the summit, state leaders and heads of the GMS countries and the President of Asian Development Bank posed for documentary photos.

Also present at the summit were Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Prime Minister for the Royal Government of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Boungnang Vorachit, Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Vietnam Socialist Republic Mr Phan Van Khai and President of Asian Development Bank Mr Tadao Chino.

Moreover, a sign-contract ceremony was held at Ballroom-1 of the Hotel Inter-Continental. Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office of the Union of Myanmar Brig-Gen Abel and ministers concerned of GMS countries signed in the Intergovernmental Agreement on Power Interconnection and Trade in the GMS.
