collective, concerted efforts for modernizing Yangon City

Yangon, 23 March -
City Housing Project Supervisory Committee Chairman State Peace and
Development Council Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt attended coordination
meeting 2/2003 of the committee held at the hall of the Department of Human
Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction on
Bogyoke Aung San Road here this morning.
Chairman of the committee
Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt made an opening speech. He said the committee
was formed to assign duties for upgrading Yangon City to have international
standard and success has been achieved to a certain extent. In accordance
with the guidance of the Head of State on turning the city into an
international one, efforts are being made based on the guidance. The task is
a big one but officials concerned have made efforts in unity and the city
can be seen lush and green, and spick and span. He said all are to maintain
this condition and to strive for the city to be modern and grand.
At present, the main roads in
the city are being upgraded into six-lane ones to meet the international
standard. As Strand Road is used mainly by heavy vehicles, it is upgraded
into a six-lane one. At the same time, the railroad parallel to Strand Road
is upgraded. Moreover, tasks are underway to make drainage and sewerage
system improved. Jetties along the river were in ruin due to lack of proper
repair and maintenance in successive years. So, arrangements are being made
to maintain and upgrade them, he said.

In addition, efforts are made
for emergence of modern and grand buildings along the main roads such as
Pyay Road, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and Mindhamma Road. In doing so, not only
the departments but also national entrepreneurs are assigned duties for
construction of modern and grand buildings. In implementing the guidance of
the Head of State by setting accurate aims, departmental staff and private
entrepreneurs are to make collective and concerted efforts free from
departmental and personal attachments but for the city to have an
international standard. Now, the city is lush and green and transportation
is smooth.
In conclusion, the
Secretary-1 urged all officials concerned to unitedly continue making
efforts for turning the city into a clean, lush and green, modern and grand
one meeting international standard.

Afterwards, members of the
CHPSC and officials made reports on respective sectors for development of
the city. After attending to the needs, the Secretary-1, accompanied by
