Jan — The Religious Affairs Department announced that
State Ovadaçariya Pahtama Taungkyaunggyi Monastery
Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Varinda, aged 86 and
66 vasa, of Taunggyi, Shan State (East), passed away at
4 pm on 6 January, 11th Waning of Nadaw, 1366 ME.

Chinlon contest to be held

Jan — The first Myanmar traditional Chinlon (cane ball)
competition will be held to hail the Buddha Pujaniya
Festival of the Kyaikkhauk Pagoda in Thanlyin from 16 to
24 February from 12 noon to 10 pm daily at the south
west stairways of the pagoda.

Jan—Hailing the 60th Anniversary Armed Forces Day which
falls on 27 March 2005, the Poem Contest Organizing
Sub-committee under the Poem and Arts Competition
Organizing Work Committee, chaired by Deputy Minister
for Culture Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, has announced to
hold the Poem Contest to mark the 60th Anniversary Armed

Jan — Accompanied by Myingyan District Peace and
Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Tun Win and

Brig-Gen Aung Tun on 4 January arrived at the site of
Shwepadetha Co in Pinlai Village, Myingyan, Mandalay
Division where onions, a kind of export crops, were
grown after vacant land was reclaimed and inspected
cultivation of 81 acres of onions.
