Algerian President felicitates Senior General Than Shwe

YANGON, 19 Jan— The following is a message of felicitations from Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, on the occasion of the 57th Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

Minister on inspection tour of Maday, Khawa dams in Magway Div

YANGON, 19 Jan— Accompanied by officials concerned, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo made an inspection tour of Maday dam project built on Maday creek near Kyoepin village, Kanma Township, Magway Division on 16 January, where Director U Tin Maung Ohn of Construction Group-2 of Irrigation Department reported the minister on progress of constructing the conduit of the main embankment.

Bands perform musical skills

YANGON, 19 Jan — The 14th Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary Armed Forces Day (2005) continued at the People’s Square, here, this morning.

Before the competition, student bands of Yankin Education College Practising Middle School and Botahtaung Basic Education High School No 4 presented skills demonstration to the enthusiasts.

35 armed group members, 20 dependents exchanged arms for peace in Oct-Dec

YANGON, 19 Jan — The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, has striven for national reconsolidation and has been making concerted efforts for equitable development of all the regions of the country. Therefore, armed groups realizing correct endeavours and genuine goodwill of the government and understanding their destructive acts exchanged arms for peace at the embrace of the State, the Tatmadaw and the people individually and in groups in October, November and December 2004.

YANGON, 19 Jan—The opening of the 44th Defence Services Commander-in-Chief’s trophy shooting contest (2004-2005) took place at the shooting range of PyinOoLwin Station on 16 January.
