Yangon splendour at an affordable price

By Steve Finch
DOUBLE colonnades and a row of balconies protruding from the first floor make this Myanmar Times House of the Week an impressive proposition for potential buyers, although the building site directly opposite does not make for picturesque views.

Location 18, Kandaw Mon Housing, Lay Dount Kan Road, Thingangyun township
Price K135 million

The property has two front gates and a long expanse of driveway in front, along with a double garage and a covered porch to fend off monsoon rains.

Inside, the house is not as big as the impressive façade suggests – the hallway, although spacious, is also the living room in the absence of a more suitable alternative. Small families might consider sparing the downstairs bedroom for use as a living area, although the room is a little dark.

A small dining room – with space for a table seating about six people – is accessed through an archway at the far side of the hallway. The kitchen is small given the size of the house and culinary enthusiasts may decide to fit extra storage space. A small bathroom with shower and wash basin lies next to the staircase.

The upstairs opens out into a long hallway flanked by two balconies and a big arched window that lights up the whole of the room. Buddhist homeowners might consider using the space as a shrine room, or a living room given the lack of options on the ground floor. Two bedrooms, which are similar in size, lead off the hallway. One of the bedrooms has a balcony and they both share a bathroom with shower, toilet and wash basin. The master bedroom, which lies on the opposite side of the staircase, features a balcony and bathroom.

The property would be ideal for homebuyers looking to invest time and money in the long term. With no previous owners, the possibilities for adding personal touches to make this house a home are endless and the mansion-esque front of the property would certainly impress friends.
