Old hits back with young actress

By Kyaw Kyaw Tun

A WELL-KNOWN singer in the 1980s for her powerful vocals, Naw Li Zar is reappearing in the Yangon music industry on May 20 with the release of a VCD of her former hits.

The VCD, Yet Yet Set Set (Cruelly), is a collection of 11 of her best songs, mostly pop and rock copy songs, from her former albums.

Naw Li Zar, 46, said that she is satisfied with her songs, yet she does not know if this generation of young music fans will appreciate them.

“It is very exciting to reproduce my best songs,” she said at a press conference at Mr Guitar Café on May 9. “But I’m afraid the songs might not fit with today. I think the songs will still be popular, but I don’t know. I have to wait and see whether today’s girls accept my songs or not.”

Compiling old songs in a VCD is nothing new – singers May Sweet, Cho Pyone and May Khalar have done the same.

However, what is unusual about this VCD is that all of the songs were performed by the young, popular actress Nandar Hlaing. In most VCDs each song features different actors or actresses. In this one, Nandar Hlaing stars throughout the VCD. Other actors, such as Yazar Newin, Lwin Moe, Dwe and Lu Min, make guest appearances.

Nandar Hlaing said she was happy to play a lead role in the VCD because it enabled her to have a strong influence over it.

“The main reason I produced this VCD and acted in every song was to have the freedom of acting in the songs as I liked. I wanted to shape my ideas and thoughts as I liked, not be influenced by others’ ideas,” Nandar Hlaing said.

The songs were played in a new version by Lazy Club band and recorded at Studio D. Maung Myo Min, Ko Naing (NVG), Peter and Wunna Khwar Nee directed the songs and Nandar Hlaing produced it through Say Ta Man Music Production.
