MYANMAR has handed over to China nine suspects arrested on drug trafficking offences, the joint secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control said last week.

Police Colonel Hkam Awng said the seven men and two women were handed over to Chinese police at the border town of Mong La on June 7.

Police Colonel Hkam Awng said the Chinese suspects were arrested during three separate raids in Mong La in April and May which resulted in the seizure of 22 kilograms of heroin and about 100,000 methamphetamine tablets, worth a total of about US$100,000.

The arrests followed a tip-off from Chinese anti-narcotic officials, Police Colonel Hkam Awng said.

He said the arrests were an indication of the growing cooperation between Myanmar and China in curbing the drug trade along their common border.

Myanmar had handed over 32 suspected drug traffickers to the Chinese authorities during the past three years, Police Colonel Hkam Awng said.
