By Ye Lwin

THE inaugural Four Nations Trade Fair 2004 will open on December 1, according to an official statement released by the Ministry of Commerce last week.

The Four Nations Fair – so called because of the involvement of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos – will host government ministries, organizations and businesses for five days.

“The trade fair will be held at the Myanmar Convention Centre on Mindhamma Road,” said an official from the Directorate of Trade.

Myanmar’s hosting of the trade fair was agreed at the Bagan Summit held in November last year which brought together the four participating countries.

According to the Bagan Summit resolution, the purpose of holding the Four Nations Trade Fair is to develop the economies of Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos and to narrow the economic gap between the four nations.

Myanmar is the first to hold the fair, which will then be held annually, rotating among the four participating countries.
