AN organisation based in the United States donated 4000 books
for distribution to universities in Myanmar at a ceremony held
in Yangon on July 15.
The used books were donated by the Myanmar Youth Association,
which was founded in 2001 by Myanmar living in the US. The books
were handed over to representatives of the ministries of Education,
Health, Culture, Science and Technology, and Transport.
The first donation ceremony in 2002 was attended by the then
Secretary 1 of the State Peace and Development Council, General
Khin Nyunt, who has since been appointed Prime Minister.
Since then the association has collected more than 20,000 books
for educational institutions in Myanmar.
The co-chair of the association, Daw Win Win Kyi, who has lived
in the US for more than 40 years, said Americans with no links
with Myanmar had also donated books.
Major General Kyaw Win, from the Ministry of Defence, representing
the Prime Minister, General Khin Nyunt, accepted the books on
behalf of the educational institutions at last week’s ceremony.
“This is the sixth donation and we have plans to donate
more books and computers in this year,” Daw Win Win Kyi
said last week.
