Anniversary for weaving school

By Khin Hninn Phyu

MYANMAR’S first weaving school, Saunder, is celebrating its 90th anniversary next month.

The school was established in 1914 at Amarapura in Mandalay Division and it has trained many people who have become prominent weavers, said Daw Tin Swe Aye, the director of the Department of Cottage Industries, under the Ministry of Cooperatives.

To celebrate the August 6 anniversary, a museum and art gallery will be officially opened in the Saunder’s compound on the Mandalay-Sagaing Highway.

The museum will display antique traditional and royal costumes and native folk art. There will be also be a photo exhibition of the history of the weaving school.

The art gallery will show and sell traditional native costumes and craft work.

There will also be demonstrations using looms so that visitors will also have a chance to see traditional weaving processes, said Daw Tin Swe Aye.
