TRIBUTES were paid to the national hero, General Aung San and other fallen leaders, who were assassinated in 1947, at a memorial ceremony held at the Martyrs Mausoleum near the Shwe Dagon Pagoda on July 19.The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Senior General Than Shwe, was represented by the Culture Minister, Major-General Kyi Aung at the early morning ceremony.

 
THE first of US$35.6 million in approved grants from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is expected to begin flowing into Myanmar in September under a process that will see a major expansion of healthcare resources.
 
THE Yangon municipal area is expected to cover nearly 300 square miles by 2010, show figures released by Yangon City Development Committee. The projection shows that the city will cover more than 294 square miles by 2010, an increase of nearly 30 square miles over its current size.
 
THE government last week called on Britain to drop its opposition to Myanmar becoming a member of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) forum.The call was made in a government statement issued on July 19, a day after Reuters news agency reported that Britain was adamant in refusing to approve Myanmar’s membership of the 25- member grouping.
 
 
     

THE visit to China in early July by the Prime Minister, General Khin Nyunt, had shown the world that China and Myanmar enjoyed a “very special” relationship, a senior official at the Foreign Affairs Ministry said last week.

ANCIENT rock art discovered in a cave near Taunggyi in Shan State is the first of its kind to be found on mainland Southeast Asia, the head of the Archeology Department at Yangon University, Professor Daw Yee Yee Aung, said last week.

Producers say the cost of making and promoting a movie, which includes hiring directors, actors and actresses, film crews and equipment as well as advertising expenses, has more than doubled since early last year.

 

THE organisers of Thailand’s first international information and communication technology exposition are urging representatives from Myanmar’s ICT sector to participate.
