REPRESENTATIVES from the Singapore business community last week visited Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia to explore ways to improve transport links between the three countries’ garment industries and key international markets.

The August 12-19 tour came in anticipation of the lifting on January 1, 2005, of a World Trade Organisation quota system that regulates garment exports, which is expected to cause upheaval in the global textile industry.

 

PTTEP International Limited, a Thai state energy company, signed a Production Share Contract with The Ministry of Energy on August 7 to explore two new offshore oil and natural gas blocks.

 

A Nepalese business delegation will visit Myanmar for the first time in seven years this month, with the aim of smoothing the way for direct bilateral trade, a spokesman for the Nepalese Embassy told Myanmar Times last week.

High-rise construction had experienced a cement shortage prior to the government’s announcement on May 10 that cement imports would be permitted, but although there was more cement on the market and demand had decreased with the beginning of Buddhist Lent, prices remained unchanged.

THE Ministry of Transport will upgrade its Institute of Marine Technology in Yangon next January to offer diplomas and bachelor degrees.The Myanmar Mercantile Marine Degree College will offer a four-year bachelor degree, a one-year advanced diploma and a two-year diploma courses, said U Win Thein, the principal of the IMT.

 
 
 

MYANMAR needs to be prepared to minimise any negative pricing effects involving pharmaceuticals when it implements international agreements on trade related intellectual property rights (TRIPS), a workshop in Yangon has been told.
