The Yayway cemetery was awash with monsoon rain and the mood among mourners was sombre. Yangon’s young and old turned out to mourn the loss of the skinny, curly-haired and bespectacled artist who, like his lyrics, “Oh evening star! You are smashed while shining brightly,” left the world while still in his prime.

 
MANY people wear t-shirts these days. They are light make you feel comfortable and can be bought in a variety of styles and colours. Many t-shirts also come with mottos or funny sayings on them, but occasionally the slogans can be a little bizarre.
 
Peanut Butter’s front man Min Maw Kun (who is more than a little popular with the ladies) and Kyaw Thu Soe worked the crowd well. There was laughter in the crowd in reaction to their lyrics, “You all say I’m ugly, but you must be blind because my mum says I am cute.”

 
     

YANGON’S youth are spending increasing amounts of time at the hairdresser as new styles and trends are hitting the streets, hairdressers and trend setters told the Myanmar Times.

 

I even used to scold some of my friends for keeping large amounts of cash with them, and I never brought a lot of money with me unless I needed to go shopping.But recently I realised that a half empty purse had its pros and cons.

 

TATOOS are common all over the world. Some people just like the look of them, others use tattoos to make social or political statements and for some tattooing is part of their culture and traditions. Some Chin tribesmen have practiced tattooing for almost a millennium.

 

THE fifth annual Malaysian International Food and Beverage Trade Fair 2004 and the Malaysian International Halal Food Conference were held in Kuala Lumpur last month and businesses world wide were invited to attend, including the Kyet Shar Soon food centre from Myanmar.

 

PHYU Nyein San was born deaf and dumb on November 5, 1987 and while she has suffered many setbacks in her life, she has reason to celebrate. Phyu Nyein San completed her tenth standard of schooling this year. The tenth standard exams are considered difficult for every child and many children fail.

 

“It is a long time since we have had a film week like this but if there is a positive public response then the embassy will not hesitate to make it an annual event,” Mr Bhatia said at the event’s inaugural screening.

 

Reverend Babson is from Maine and is working towards a doctorate in Ministry from the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. She also accompanies students from Virginia Seminary to Myanmar for a one-month experimental study period, so they can learn more about the Christian community and traditional Buddhist culture.

 

Music
Iron Cross will put on a two day concert August on 27 and 28 August at the Strand hotel. The band will play ‘unplugged’ from 7 pm both nights. The entrance fee is K6500 per day and seating arrangements will be in place.
