Pulled in two directions in romantic new film

By Aung Kyaw

TWO pieces of string (Kyoe-Hnit-Sa) written and directed by Khin Maung Oo and Soe Theim Htut was previewed last Sunday morning at Thamada Cinema.

It features well-known actors Dwe, who also sings, Tint Tint Tun who has not appeared in a film for some time and newcomer Eindra Kyawzin.Ko Aung.

Ko Aung Zaw (played by Dwe) and Thandar Aung (played by Tint Tint Tun) agree to get a divorce after seven years of marriage because they cannot agree. Zaw wants to move to Yangon to start a business and his wife wants to remain in Mandalay. So Ko Aung Zaw leaves his wife and Mandalay to follow his dream of setting up a computer training centre in Yangon.

When he arrives in the city, he meets a 20-year-girl, May Oak Aw (played by Eindra Kyaw Zin) who has a weak heart and faints a lot. Later they fall in love. Unfortunately, his wife, Thandar Aung, discovers she is pregnant with their first child and she tries to contact her husband. Before she can speak to him she hears that he plans to marry May Oak Aw and so she doesn’t tell him the news.

But the family doctor spills the beans to Ko Aung Zaw, who is thrown into confusion. He has already promised to marry May Oak Aw and look after her, and he has promised her grandmother he will do so. Her life depends on it as she becomes more and more ill. But what about his child, growing in the womb of his ex-wife? He is pulled in two different directions, as if by two pieces of string.

He must choose one or the other, he cannot have both.

The performance of Eindra Kyaw Zin as the young girl is the standout of this movie. Dwe and Tint Tint play their roles just after a fashion. The distinct weak point of this film is that although it is said Ko Aung Zaw divorced his wife to set up a business in Yangon, he does nothing about his business except for watching an American film , Autumn in New York and asking May Oak Aw about her computer class.

Aside from these flaws, it’s entertaining enough and will no doubt attract young viewers who will be engrossed in its romantic scenes.

Two Pieces of String will screen in Yangon and Mandalay from March 11 to 24.
