JUST stepping into Mr Guitar Café on Sayar San Road in Yangon is an experience for the customer – even before food and drinks are ordered, patrons are welcomed by a quirky mixture of antique and modern decorative elements specially chosen by the owner, Nay Myo Say.

“The interior design of a restaurant can be used to express the interests of the owner, and because I have always been interested in design I feel that it is worthwhile to spend money on it,” he said.

 

Dr Sai Sam Htun, the chairman and managing director of Loi Hein Co., Ltd, which began producing Alpine brand drinking water in 2002, said sales have more than doubled compared with the same period last year.
“From February to April last year, we sold only three million (one-litre) bottles of water, but during the same period this year we sold seven million bottles,” he said.

 

BUSINESS people from Busan, the second biggest city in South Korea, met with representatives from about 100 domestic companies in Yangon last week to search for new markets for South Korean products in Myanmar in the wake of a drop in bilateral trade.
Mr Choi Yong Tae, the commercial counselor at the Yangon office of the Seoul-based Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), said that trade between Myanmar and South Korea has been declining.

     

“I introduced the readymade school uniforms (for girls) because I sympathise with parents who have to spend not only money but a lot of time finding outfits for their children,” said Daw Myat San Win, a director of the company.

 
HOUSE OF THE WEEK

The house, two storeys and somewhat worn-looking from the outside, sits on a wide compound with plenty of space to park cars. The driveway is separated from the compound wall by a strip of earth that has been planted with trees and a garden.

 

The K1 billion project, on which work began last September, is also the first Myanmar-owned resort in the archipelago. The five partners in the project are A1 Construction, Tour Mandalay Co., Ltd., the Panorama Hotel in downtown Yangon, the Kawthaung Motel and the Bagan Sagawa Palace (Power) Hotel.

 

Brigadier-General Pyi Sone was speaking at the Ministry of Science and Technology at the opening ceremony for a series of training courses held to promote understanding of the patent law provisions of intellectual property legislation to be introduced by 2006.

 

KINDERGARTENS provided the basic foundation for education, the Minister of Education, U Than Aung, told the opening ceremony of a training course held at the Myanmar Education Research Department on Pyay Road, Yangon last month.

 
 

THE Minister for Health, Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, praised the Myanmar Red Cross Society for implementing community-based health care services at a ceremony held in Yangon on May 8 to mark World Red Cross Day.
