A SURVEY last year found that only 15 per cent of students at government state schools were using some form of tobacco, down from 22 per cent three years earlier.

Dr Nyo Nyo Kyaing, the manager of the Health Department’s Tobacco Free Initiative Project, told Myanmar Times last week that the decline was probably due to an increase in the number of students who had been taught about the dangers of smoking in the school curriculum.

She said that last year, 66 per cent of the students in government schools had attended classes about the hazards of smoking.

“Four out of ten students think passive smoking is harmful to them and 85 per cent of those who smoke want to stop, which shows their awareness of the dangers of tobacco use has increased,” Dr Nyo Nyo Kyaing said.
