New Indian ambassador

By Thet Khaing

THE government has accepted the appointment of Mr Bhaskar Mitra as India’s new ambassador to Myanmar.

A government announcement on June 23 said the 57-year-old career diplomat will replace Mr Rajiv Bhatia, who has served in the post since 2002.

Mr Bhatia has been appointed as India’s ambassador to Mexico.

The announcement said Mr Mitra had previously served as India’s ambassador to Bahrain and Uzbekistan.

It said that during a diplomatic career spanning 32 years, he also served in Indian embassies in Moscow, Moscow, Kathmandu, New York and Nairobi.

It was not known last week when Mr Mitra will be arriving in Yangon.
