Young hopefuls win in first singing contest

THREE amateur singers grabbed the rare opportunity to reveal their talents at a singing contest last month, the first of a series planned by City FM and Laser World.

They were Kyaw Maung Maung Oo, who took first prize, Myat Su Khaing, second and Min Thin, third.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at the Ginza Pan snack bar, near Aung San Stadium on June 11.

Although the competition was aimed at male singers, there were two girls who entered and one of them, Myat Su Khaing, 13, took second place.

“I like songs which have to be sung in high pitch and mostly I like man singers’ songs especially R Zarni’s,” she said.

Singer R Zarni gave the prizes, as all entrants had to sing a song of his, Gandawin Sezar, first released by Soe Lwin Lwin.

“We are running the competition because we wanted to give amateur singers a chance to perform, and a chance to measure themselves against others,” said U Aung Kyu Hein, managing director of Laser World.

In this round, 10 singers were chosen as finalists from 135 who entered and auditioned at the City FM studio.

“All singers had to sing the same song to be fair,” U Aung Kyu Hein said.
“Next time we hold this competition in July, the entrants will have to sing Achit Net Guitar by singer Tin Zar Maw,” he said.

He has chosen a girl singer’s song next time in order to encourage more girl singers.

“We plan to hold a singing contest every second month, to give singers an opportunity and also to entertain the City FM listeners as we broadcast the contest.

“We will produce VCDs of each one as well.”
