Miners seek to form industry association

By Kyaw Thu

A GROUP of miners and geologists in Myanmar has submitted an application to the government for permission to start a new mining association, said the director of the Myanmar-Tin Tungsten Co. Ltd mining company.

U Khin Maung Htay, who plans to become a member of the association, said the applicants submitted their request to the Ministry of Mines for approval.

“The aim is to organise miners and geologists, to increase exploration for minerals and to draw detailed geology maps for the whole country,” he said.
U Aung Ko – a gemmologist and the chairman of Genuine Gems Associates Co. Ltd, a consultancy and trading company – said the mining association is necessary to organise geologists and miners.

He said the association can represent the concerns of miners and can take a leadership role in the industry in Myanmar.

U San Lwin, the managing director of the GeoDynamics mining company, also welcomed the idea of forming a miners association.

“Such an association will provide miners with opportunities to exchange experiences and will help create a market for their products,” he said.
