THE appeal of the Myanmar Times House of the Week lies in both its grand colonial architecture and its spectacular location along the shores of Yangon’s picturesque Inya Lake.

The house is approached along a narrow, shady lane that ends at the back of the house. To the left of the driveway is a weathered tennis court and a fruit-bearing pomelo tree.

The house can be accessed through a modest entryway in the back or, by walking around the side of the building along a paved footpath, through a more majestic entryway in the front.

The front of the house faces a huge lawn and garden that slopes gently down to the lake. A concrete patio area with electric lamps provides a perfect place for outdoor dining.

The roof of the big portico is supported by a series of towering columns, and shelters the glass entry doors. The gray marble floor of the entrance hall suggests use as a grand ballroom in which to host spectacular parties.

To the right of the entrance hall is the living room, which provides a view to the front of the property and has an attached bathroom.

To the left of the hall is a marble stairway with beautifully painted iron railing. Facing the stairway is a space that can be used as a study or a single bedroom.

The kitchen is also downstairs, adjacent to which is a storage room and another space that can be used as an extension of the kitchen or as a showroom for cooking utensils.

The stairway climbs up to a landing that provides access to a roofed and screened-in verandah, the perfect place to enjoy beautiful weather or watch the monsoon rains fall from the sky.

The upstairs has three bedrooms, all of which are quite large and come with attached bathrooms and dressing rooms. The master bedroom also has a small roofed verandah that extends across open space to the detached three-room servants quarters at the back of the property.

The house also comes with a satellite TV system.
