Korean troupe enchants fans

Review by Aung Kyaw

FANS of Korean culture were treated to a rich display of the country’s traditional dance, music and dress, when the Morning Star performance troupe came to town.

The performance, at the Sedona Hotel in Yangon on July 7 and 8, was organised by the Korean embassy and the Korean Association of Myanmar.
The troupe, composed of Koreans and Americans, hails from the United States and most members are under 20 years of age. Despite their youth, they are highly accomplished at playing traditional Korean percussion instruments like the Changoo and the traditional harp, called Kayakeum.

The stirring music, attractive dance styles and colourful traditional costumes proved a delight for Korean culture lovers. The beautiful Fan and Forest dances particularly charmed the crowd.

The group is trained by Jiyeon Cheh, an accomplished traditional Korean dancer. Morning Star has performed at over 1000 events worldwide, and performs regularly in and around their hometown of Seattle.
