Lessons from Asia Fashion Week

WELL-KNOWN Myanmar fashion designer Tatee, visited Asia Fashion Week 2005 in Singapore from November 8 to 10, to check-out the latest Asian trends.

Even though he has shown his work at Asian fashion weeks in the past, this time he said, he went only to observe and learn.
“In the past, when I showed my works I had to stay at my booth from 9 to 5. I couldn’t go anywhere and learn anything,” he said.

“This time, as I was just a visitor, I wandered from booth to booth and spoke to a lot of designers. I plan to participate in the Singapore Asia Fashion Week next year so I wanted to see what they are doing so that I can get an idea of what to prepare."

Approximately 60 designers from 11 Asian countries and two from Europe showcased their work at the Singapore Asia Fashion Week this year.

“The four main designers were from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and India. They were all famous professional designers, with many years of experience in their countries,” Tatee said.

He took time out from his busyschedule running a fashion design school in Yangon as well as his own design studio to attend the Singaporean fashion fair.

“Because I want to learn what people out of my country are doing and share this experience with my pupils,” he explained.

“The fashion industry is still developing in Myanmar. So we have a lot to learn,” he adds.

“Even countries like Malaysia and Indonesia had up to five designers participating in the fashion week.

“My favorite designs were by a young Indonesian designer. His designs were very different. Through seeing the work of this designer, I realised that whether the design is good or bad depends on the talent and creativity of a designer and not on how developed his country is.”
