SEVEN female artists will hold an art exhibition at AZADA art
gallery from November 20 to 26.
Artist Sandy says, this is the third group show exclusively
of female artists, she has organised and participated in.
In 2003, artist Wai Mar and Sandy held an exhibition together,
entitled ‘Double Rays’. Two years later, they enlisted
four other female artists to join them in an exhibition titled
‘Rays I’.
Their latest exhibition, this week, will be called ‘Rays
II’.
“This time, seven artists will cooperate together including
one who has never exhibited before,” Sandy says.
She says she has been interested in organizing female-only exhibitions
since studying painting under U Ye Myint, through who she met
many other female artists.
“Most of the art exhibitions held in Myanmar are put on
by male artists. So as female artists, we wanted to do a female-only
art exhibition,” she says.
Female artists face many more challenges in Myanmar than male
artists, she believes.
“Women have to try harder than men to get a place in the
art industry. It is hard for a woman to penetrate into a world
which is so male-dominated.
“We, seven artists have different ideas, use different
techniques. We use different mediums. So the audience can enjoy
seven different ‘rays’,” Sandy says with a smile.
