The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission inspects Dawei Prison, Dawei Home for the Aged, Dawei Police Lock-up, and Dawei District Court Detention Center

An inspection team led by members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, U Kyaw Myint, conducted the inspection of Dawei Prison in Dawei Township, Dawei District, Tanintharyi Region on 2 July 2025, and Dawei Home for the Aged, Dawei Police Lock-up, and Dawei District Court Detention Center on 3 July 2025, in accordance with Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.
During the inspection of Dawei Prison, the inspection team assessed whether the prisoners had access to their fundamental rights, including an adequate food supply, access to healthcare, and provision of sufficient purified water. The team also inquired about the receipt of items issued by the prison and those sent by family members, as well as whether the prisoners were allowed family visits. Additionally, the team evaluated the conditions for physical activities, the right to freedom of religion, and access to education and vocational training and investigated any instances of human rights violations or torture by prison officials and fellow inmates. The inspection team also met with the family members of the prisoners and inquired whether they faced any difficulties in visiting and sending items to the prisoners. Moreover, six prisoners who requested private interviews were met separately, and their statements were documented.
Then the inspection team inspected various facilities within the Dawei Prison, including the dormitories, prison clinic, library, family visit area, kitchen, dining room, food warehouse, water purifiers, and the water sanitation system. Additionally, the MNHRC donated knowledgeable books for the benefit of the prisoners.
At Dawei police lock-up and Dawei District Court detention center, the MNHRC team inspected the conditions of detainees during the remand period, whether any torture occurred during the investigation, and whether there were opportunities to meet with family members, as well as the provision of food and drinking water, the disposal of sewage, and the overall cleanliness of the facilities.
At Dawei Home for the Aged, the inspection team met with elderly residents in their living quarters and assessed various conditions. These included the provision of healthcare services, food and nutritional support, access to clean drinking and household water, freedom of religion and belief, and the overall hygiene and sanitation standards of dormitories, bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens. The team also inquired about arrangements for recreation and relaxation, the accessibility of pension payments for eligible residents, and the availability of social pension support for those aged 85 and above.
The inspection team will send its findings and recommendations to the relevant departments in accordance with the MNHRC law for necessary actions.
