Shan State Hluttaw

Organization

1. In accord with the section 161 of the 2008 Constitution, Shan State Hluttaw is formed with the following 143 representatives:

  • 100 elected representatives from 50 townships by electing two from each township;
  • 7 elected representatives from Shan State Hluttaw, each is elected from each national race determined by the authorities concerned as having a population which constitutes 0.1 percent and above of the population of the union, of the remaining national races other then those who have already obtained respective State or a Self-Administered Area in that State;
  • 36 Defence Services personnel nominated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services in accord with the law for an equal number of one-third of the total number of Hluttaw representatives elected under sub-section (a) and (b).

2. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Shan State Hluttaw are as follows:

  • U Sai Lone Seng (Keng Tung Constituency No.1)      - Speaker
  • U Sao Aung Myat (Ywangan Constituency No.2)        - Deputy Speaker

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of Shan State Hluttaw are as follows:

  • Election
  • Representation
  • Legislation
  • Oversight

Objectives

          The Shan State Hluttaw shall set the following objectives:

  • To develop the legislative role of the State;
  • To meet the needs of the people in the State and to create a better social living standard;
  • To carry out effective representation for the people in the State, and
  • To value the State Hluttaw as a body that makes reforms in line with democratic system.

Policy

Since the people value the Shan State Hluttaw as a body carrying out effective democratic reforms relating to legislation, representation and oversight, the Shan State Hluttaw performs its tasks laying down policies for meeting the people’s desires and creating a better social living standard.

Vision

The Shan State Hluttaw will represent the citizens’ welfare and expectations making laws for peace, development and solidarity desired by all the citizens and keeping oversight on the activities of the executive body through full application of the rights bestowed by the Constitution.
